If you are renting a private apartment, you may engage the services of a property agent to help you with the arrangements. Do note that agents charge an agent fee if you engage their services. Some things to look out for are:
- Rent – This includes monthly rental of the unit, rental deposit, security deposit, administrative charges.
- Location – Whether the unit is located near amenities such as MRT stations, bus stops, grocery stores or food outlets
- Lease period – The lease period of a unit is normally one to two years. Some landlords may ask for up to three months’ rent as deposit.
- Others – You may wish to factor in additional costs, such as for water and electricity charges for the unit you are renting, Wi-Fi charges or having to purchase your own furnishings if the unit you are renting is unfurnished.
Any contract or tenancy agreement signed is solely between student and house owner / service provider. Always make sure to personally visit the room / apartment for rent before making any commitments and never make any payments before that.
