Writing in Chinese: Major Genres and Styles (CCC103)

CCC103 Writing in Chinese: Major Genres and Styles is designed to strengthen students’ writing skills and promote a confident command of the Chinese language. This course discusses the key structural and stylistic features of major Chinese text types, namely, descriptive, narrative and persuasive. It gives students an opportunity to develop their writing skills in creative writing, professional writing, journalistic writing and academic writing. The relation between writing and the diverse cultures that produces it will be covered.

• Recall basic characteristics of various types of Chinese literary works and real-life documents
• Define cultural and social implications for language
• Recognize the rhetoric styles and the corresponding writing skills used in advanced Chinese texts
• Describe strategies for improving, editing and finalizing Chinese writings and discuss the relation between effective writing and cultural implications
• Develop awareness of genre through reading and writing different types of Chinese texts
• Expand the knowledge and skills acquired to composing different types of Chinese texts, namely narrative, descriptive, expository and persuasive, in a highly effective way
• Show competence in writing for professional and academic work
