Career Prospects

Graduates can look forward to a rewarding career in IP and related industries. For example, individuals aspiring to become patent attorneys may work at law firms, IP firms, or even IP divisions of major corporations that innovate and conduct R&D. Graduates of the other two specialisations can go on to work as IP consultants / managers / experts that advise, manage and help businesses develop appropriate IP strategies to monetise their intangible assets. Other places of work include IP offices and technology transfer offices at research institutions/universities.

Programme Structure

The MIPIM curriculum builds on a common core foundation on IP law and IP management. It is followed by training in specialised domain knowledge and skills through completing courses in one of the three (3) specialisation tracks, each representing the different skills set needed to operate in the IP ecosystem. Individuals could opt for multiple pathways in which they may graduate with a graduate certificate, graduate diploma or a master's degree.

2-year (24 month) Pathway

The 2-year pathway (MIPIM-MAJ) is open to local students only and offers the following specialisations:

Admission Requirements

Refer to general admission criteria for graduate programmes.

In addition, applicants, who are interested to go for the Patent Agency and IP Technology specialisation, should preferably possess a Science, Engineering or Technical degree.

The programme is able to take in international students for the one (1) year accelerated pathway only. For the two (2) year pathway, you must be a Singapore citizen, permanent resident or a resident in Singapore (e.g., Employment Pass holder) in order to apply for admission.

Applicants will be required to submit a CV detailing their relevant experience (education, training and/or work)

How many intakes are there in a year for the Master of IP and Innovation Management (MIPIM)?
There are two intakes per year that take place in January and July.

Modular courses within the GCIPIM programme may be taken individually via the SUSS Academy in the January or July semesters. Upon successful completion of these modular courses and attaining the minimum CGPA of 2.5, eligible students may apply to SUSS Academy for the Graduate Certificate.
How long does it take to complete the MIPIM programme?
For the 1-year MIPIM accelerated pathway, the minimum duration is 2 semesters (one year) while the maximum is 4 semesters (two years).

For the 2-year MIPIM-MAJ pathway, the minimum duration is 4 semesters (two years) while the maximum is 8 semesters (four years).
Are there any special entry requirements?
Applicants who intend to undergo the Patent Agency track or IP Technology track should preferably have a science, engineering or technical degree.
Are there any exemptions?
Credit recognition for IPM501 Foundation IP Law and IPM521 Advanced Patent Law will be given to successful candidates who have a Graduate Certificate in Intellectual Property Law (GCIP) from the National University of Singapore (NUS).

Credit recognition for IPM501 Foundation IP Law, IPM503 IP Asset Management and IPM505 IP & Business Strategy will be given to successful candidates who have a Specialist Certificate in Intangible Asset Management (SCIAM) from the IP Academy of IPOS International (IPOS-I).

Credit recognition for IPM501 Foundation IP Law, IPM503 IP Asset Management and IPM505 IP & Business Strategy will be given to successful candidates who have passed the SUSS Graduate Certificate in IP and Innovation Management Challenge Examinations (GCIPIM CEX) at the Global Institute of Intellectual Property (GIIP).

Credit recognition for IPM523 Patent Practice in Singapore, IPM525 Patent Office Action, IPM527 Patent Claims, IPM529 Patent Applications and IPM531 Patent Infringement & Validity will be given to successful candidates who have passed the equivalent Patent Agents Qualifying Examination Paper(s), which will be capped at 50%, or 30 credit units (cu), of the graduation requirements to be awarded the Master of IP and Innovation Management (Patent Agency).
Pre-requisite for Enrolling in the Singapore Patent Agents Qualifying Examinations (QE)
With effect from QE2022, the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS) will introduce a pre-requisite for QE enrolment to provide patent agent trainees with a more systematic pathway to qualification. Patent agent trainees/prospective QE candidates will be required to pass the respective patent agency skills courses in the Graduate Diploma in IP and Innovation Management (Patent Agency) or the Master of IP and Innovation Management (Patent Agency). How many courses do students take in each semester?
Students are recommended to complete six (6) courses per semester for the 1-year accelerated pathway, and three (3) courses each semester for the 2-year pathway.
What are the assessment components for each course?
It comprises a mixture of quizzes, participation, group-based assignments/tutor-marked assignments and type-written examinations/end-of-course assessments. Students will need to achieve a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of at least 3.0 to be awarded the Master of IP and Innovation Management.
When are the lessons scheduled?
Classes are generally conducted on weekday evenings from 7pm to 10pm.
Are there any attendance requirements?
We encourage students to attend the six seminars/course to maximise their learning as well as to receive in-class participation marks.

What happens if I do not complete the graduate programmes (e.g. Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma, Master) within the candidature period? Can I apply to take the remaining courses via CET pathway?
Students who have not completed their graduate programmes within the stipulated candidature period will not be eligible for the award of the qualification for such graduate programmes. Such students however may apply to take, via the CET pathway, the remaining courses which they did not complete under their graduate programmes as part of their personal learning and development. Such application will be subjected to the CET admission requirement. However, as such students have exceeded the candidature period for their graduate programmes, they will not be awarded the qualification for such graduate programmes even after taking and completing the remaining courses via the CET pathway (“Condition”).
