Overview
Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering is a direct honours programme focusing on the application of engineering techniques in biological sciences and medicine. Students will be trained in core biomedical and specialised biomedical engineering areas of biomedical instrumentation and medical imaging.
Students in this programme are eligible to register for student membership with The Institution of Engineers, Singapore (IES). For more information, please visit https://www.ies.org.sg.
Students may pursue Biomedical Engineering as a single major or in combination with a Minor.
Career Prospects
Graduates from this programme are suitable for employment in the medical device/electronics industry, hospitals, private research organisations, and positions involving direct contact with healthcare, rehabilitation, and human performance.
Programme Structure
BSc Biomedical Engineering (Hons)
This is a direct honours programme. Graduating students who meet the eligibility criteria for honours classification will be awarded an honours degree based on aggregate academic performance measured by the cumulative grade point average (CGPA) assessed throughout the degree programme.
To graduate with an honours degree, students are required to complete a total of 170 credit units (cu) of courses, which include:
- 30 of SUSS Core courses
- 80 cu of Major Compulsory courses (including 10 cu of Capstone Project)
- 20
of Major Elective courses
- 40 cu of Free Electives and/or Minor
To strengthen knowledge and competency in the areas of biomedical engineering, students are encouraged to register additional BME Major Elective courses under the Free Electives basket.
The curriculum is structured such that:
- Level 1 courses consist of basic sciences and engineering;
- Level 2 covers core biomedical engineering courses such as biomaterials, biomechanics, ethics, and healthcare related topics;
- Level 3 covers advanced biomedical engineering courses such as biomedical devices, biomedical instrumentation and systems, rehabilitative and assistive engineering
- Elective courses are available in areas of advanced biomechanics, advanced biomaterials, medical imaging, genomics, cardiovascular bioengineering.
- Level 4 – Capstone Biomedical Engineering Project
